Suryakumar Yadav was the leader of the Indian cricket team that triumphed in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. However, due to his recent struggles with batting, many are questioning his future with the Indian team. A report from PTI on Tuesday, April 14, mentioned that his inconsistent batting raises doubts about his role in India's journey for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Based on current details, the upcoming tour to the UK is vital for Suryakumar, as he will face scrutiny not only as a captain but more importantly, for his batting. PTI noted that the results of the UK tour may determine if he continues in the squad for another two years leading up to major events in 2028, like the Olympics and T20 World Cup in Australia.

“Surya is currently the team captain. However, he must also ensure that he shows consistent batting performance. He will lead the team in the UK, but after that, future decisions until 2028 may be based solely on his performance," a source from BCCI told the news agency.
Surya, who ranks third in T20I runs for India, played 21 T20I games in 2025 but did not manage to achieve a single fifty. His performance showed some improvement in 2026 during a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, where he scored three half-centuries in five matches. In the opening match of India's T20 World Cup 2026 against the USA, he made an unbeaten score of 84 runs, but his form declined again afterward, and he had trouble accumulating runs. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been generating buzz since his IPL debut in 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants. After impressing with his batting in IPL 2026 games against Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and RCB, there are calls for him to be added to India’s T20I team.

There are reports that his name has been included in a list of 35 T20 experts that the national selectors have identified as possible players for the T20 matches during the Ireland tour in June-July. “The BCCI logistics team requested the selectors to provide a list of at least 35 names to arrange their Irish visas. Since the Indian team’s first entry point will be Ireland instead of England, a UK visa won’t be sufficient. Everyone needs a specific Irish visa,” a BCCI representative shared with PTI. It seems that while the selectors could choose 16 or 17 players instead of just 15, that might be excessive for a two-match series in Belfast. “The selection committee believes that Vaibhav is prepared, but there are also Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan to consider. All three have scored half-centuries in the T20 World Cup final. “If you want a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is another option,” the representative mentioned. “Vaibhav is set, but the national selectors must provide strong reasons to exclude Abhishek or Sanju. Because if one of them is left out, it raises the question, ‘How is Surya maintaining his spot? ’” the representative concluded.
