WhatsApp has been rumored for a long time to be working on a feature for usernames. Recently, the instant messaging service owned by Meta has begun taking steps towards this by allowing users to claim usernames before the complete username system is launched. Current reports indicate that WhatsApp is creating a new feature for its Android application that will enable users to pick the same usernames they have on other Meta apps like Facebook and Instagram. According to the feature tracker WABetaInfo, the ability to use matching usernames from Facebook and Instagram was found in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.34.3. This has been marked as a compatible update. While this feature is not yet available for all users, it is thought to be in the works for a future app version.

According to the screenshot provided, there will be a Username option in the Profile section of WhatsApp settings. Users will have the chance to claim their usernames using this feature. When choosing their preferred username, they can opt for one they currently utilize on other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. However, WhatsApp will ask them to confirm ownership of the username through a verification process in Meta's Accounts Centre before it can be secured. Once confirmed, the selected username will be linked to the user’s account. Those who cannot get the username they want on Facebook or Instagram may need to wait until the full username system is implemented, according to the feature tracker. The tracker also mentions that having the same username across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will help users and businesses protect their brand identity and keep a consistent online presence within Meta’s applications.

WABetaInfo has shared that this new option is still being developed and is not accessible even to beta testers involved through the Google Play Beta program. It may soon be made available for testing to a broader audience in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, WhatsApp has officially stated that it plans to finish rolling out the username system before Meta's compliance deadline in 2026.
