Acting on an email complaint filed by a Boston-based post graduate student, the Salt Lake police on Wednesday arrested a systems engineer of a reputed IT firm in the Sector-V for threatening and blackmailing her. Avinash Chaturvedi had known the complainant for the past few months from when they started their training programme in the IT major's at Gandhinagar branch. Their relationship broke when the girl left to pursue higher studies in U.S. and Avinash was send to join the firm's Salt Lake offices.

Police said that they received the complaint from the girl a few days back. The girl in her email complaint alleged that Avinash had not only sent her a email threatening and intimidating her but had kept pressurizing her. According to the girl’s complaint, Avinash had even uploaded some nude pictures of her among their common friends and colleagues and he even uploaded them in her university website. According to her Avinash was desperate that she returns to Kolkata and also was repeatedly threatening to criminally defame her in public.

The Salt Lake police commissioner Gyanwant Singh said that, we started our investigations based on her complaint. The investigation was done on the humanitarian grounds for she had genuine reasons for not physically coming to the police station and lodging a complaint. Later, at the police urging the victim's father lodged a formal complaint against Avinash completing all the legal formalities leading to the arrest.

Police said Avinash first stayed as a tenant in the Mahishghote, now he staying in Khidderpore. Prima facie, the police said that Avinash had a good relationship with the girl during their training days in the Gandhinagar. Problem surfaced when it got over and the girl was keen to pursue her higher studies in the US. Avinash wanted the girl to work with him in Kolkata. Avinash was unable to change her mind, he resorted to blackmail and threats. The girl lodged her complaint only when Avinash posted the nude pictures to blackmail her.
