The Kashmir Valley possesses a unique allure that enchants every visitor who steps foot there. Its majestic snow-covered peaks and vibrant cultural heritage have long given it the impression of being a separate realm. However, the region has lacked an efficient rail network until now. This situation is set to change soon. On June 6, 2025, the first Vande Bharat Express is scheduled to make its inaugural journey from Katra in Jammu, a significant milestone for the area. The train's launch will be officiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, celebrating the completion of the 272-kilometre Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. It will travel to the Baramulla division, paving the way for improved transportation and business opportunities. As reported by IANS, the Vande Bharat Express will run daily between Katra and the picturesque Kashmir Valley. Additionally, a dedicated freight train service will operate based on seasonal demands, ensuring the efficient transport of fresh produce and other vital supplies. Moreover, Prime Minister Modi is set to introduce passenger services from Katra—a sacred town renowned for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi temple—to Baramulla in northern Kashmir.

The establishment of a return service from Baramulla to Katra is also anticipated, representing a major advancement in India’s railway infrastructure. While there are existing rail connections in the Jammu region and within the Kashmir Valley, the Katra-Banihal part proved to be the most formidable challenge due to its rugged landscape. This 111-kilometre segment tested the limits of engineering ingenuity and human perseverance. Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Chenab Bridge, an engineering wonder soaring 1,178 feet above the Chenab River, eclipsing the height of the Eiffel Tower. He will also reveal the Anji Khad Bridge, which holds the distinction of being India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. These engineering achievements have turned the once seemingly insurmountable problems into achievable goals. The new rail connection promises to link Kashmir with Kanyakumari through an uninterrupted railway system, fulfilling a vision of national unity that has spanned seven decades. The consequences of this project are anticipated to extend well beyond infrastructure enhancements, positively impacting sectors such as horticulture, agriculture, education, and tourism, while dramatically improving the quality of life for local inhabitants.
