Apple is working on a variety of new features related to satellite connections for the iPhone, according to an experienced reporter. The technology company from Cupertino first launched satellite-based emergency calls and messages in 2022 with the release of the iPhone 14 series. All subsequent iPhone versions have included support for this, along with various enhancements for users. However, it has been suggested that soon users will also be able to utilize Apple Maps and send photos while connected to a satellite network. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg mentioned the new satellite connectivity features for the iPhone in the most recent edition of the Power On newsletter.
Firstly, Apple is reportedly creating satellite-enabled maps. This will allow iPhone users to find their way even when they do not have cellular or Wi-Fi access. The company is also testing more advanced messaging features. At present, satellite messaging only allows simple text messages. However, there could soon be the ability to send and receive photos through the Messages app as well.
To assist developers, a specific satellite framework for third-party applications is also being built. According to the journalist, this upcoming API will enable developers to incorporate satellite connection options into their applications. However, it seems that the application developers will need to implement this feature, and it might not work with all features or services. Currently, using emergency SOS through satellite on the iPhone requires a clear view of the sky and has some restrictions. Gurman mentioned that Apple intends to make several "natural usage" improvements for satellite messaging. In theory, this would allow iPhone users to remain connected via satellite even while indoors. Additionally, they might be able to use this functionality while their phone is in their pocket or inside a car.
Another significant enhancement being worked on is satellite integration with 5G. The upcoming iPhone models, often referred to as the iPhone 18 series, are expected to support 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). This technology combines 5G satellite and aerial network connectivity with ground networks, leading to better coverage and functionality in high altitudes or remote locations.
Nevertheless, all these improvements will likely necessitate substantial upgrades to Globalstar's infrastructure, which is the satellite service that Apple currently uses. Gurman indicated that if SpaceX goes ahead with the rumored acquisition of Globalstar, it could expedite the launch of these features. However, teaming up with the company owned by Musk may also require Apple to reconsider its business and long-term plans.
